Base64 Encoder Decoder Online Free
Base64 is one of those encoding formats every developer encounters eventually — in API authentication, email attachments, data URIs, JWTs, and more. A free online Base64 encoder/decoder saves you from writing throwaway scripts every time you need to convert something.
DevPlaybook’s Base64 tool handles encoding and decoding instantly, in your browser, with no account required.
What Is Base64?
Base64 is an encoding scheme that converts binary data into a string of ASCII characters. It uses 64 printable characters (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, +, /) to represent any byte sequence.
The name comes from the 64-character alphabet it uses.
Why 64 characters specifically? Because 64 is a power of 2 (2⁶), which makes the math clean: every 3 bytes of input maps to exactly 4 Base64 characters. This produces a ~33% size increase — a known, predictable tradeoff.
When Do Developers Use Base64?
HTTP Basic Authentication
Credentials in HTTP Basic Auth are Base64-encoded: Authorization: Basic dXNlcjpwYXNz. Decoding reveals the user:pass string.
JWT Tokens
JWTs are three Base64url-encoded segments separated by dots: header.payload.signature. Decoding the payload reveals the claims without needing the secret.
Data URIs
Inline images and fonts in HTML/CSS use Base64-encoded data URIs: data:image/png;base64,iVBOR.... Useful for eliminating HTTP requests on small assets.
API Responses
Some APIs return binary data (images, PDFs, certificates) as Base64 strings in JSON responses. You need to decode them before use.
Environment Variables
Binary secrets (API keys, certificates) are often Base64-encoded to safely store them as environment variable strings.
Base64 vs Base64url
Two variants exist:
| Variant | Characters | Padding | Used In |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base64 | +, / | = | General purpose, MIME |
| Base64url | -, _ | Optional | JWTs, URLs, filenames |
The URL-safe variant replaces + with - and / with _ to avoid conflicts with URL syntax. Our tool supports both.
How to Use the Base64 Encoder/Decoder
To encode:
- Open DevPlaybook Base64 Tool
- Paste your text or data in the input field
- Click Encode — result appears instantly
- Copy the Base64 string
To decode:
- Paste the Base64 string into the input field
- Click Decode
- View the decoded text or download the binary output
The tool auto-detects valid Base64 input so you rarely need to manually select a mode.
Common Use Cases Walkthrough
Decode a JWT Payload
JWT tokens look like: eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJzdWIiOiJ1c2VyMTIzIn0.abc
Take the middle segment (eyJzdWIiOiJ1c2VyMTIzIn0) and decode it. You’ll get the JSON payload: {"sub":"user123"}.
Note: decoding reveals the payload but does not verify the signature. Never trust decoded JWT claims without signature verification in production.
Decode an HTTP Basic Auth Header
If you see Authorization: Basic dXNlcjpwYXNzd29yZA==, decode dXNlcjpwYXNzd29yZA== to get user:password.
Encode a File for a Data URI
Encode an SVG or small PNG to Base64, then use it as: <img src="data:image/svg+xml;base64,[your-encoded-data]">.
Is Base64 Encryption?
No. Base64 is encoding, not encryption. It’s trivially reversible without any key. Never use Base64 as a security measure. It’s a data format, not a protection mechanism.
If you need to secure data:
- Use AES or ChaCha20 for symmetric encryption
- Use RSA or ECDSA for asymmetric encryption
- Use bcrypt or Argon2 for password hashing
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my data sent to a server when I use this tool? No. All encoding and decoding happens in your browser. Your data never leaves your device.
What’s the maximum input size?
The tool handles text inputs of any practical size. For very large binary files, a CLI tool like base64 (built into Linux/macOS) may be more efficient.
Why does decoded output sometimes look garbled? If you’re decoding binary data (an image, PDF, etc.), the raw bytes won’t render as readable text. Use the download button to save the binary output.
Does it handle Unicode? Yes. The encoder handles UTF-8 text correctly, including emoji and non-ASCII characters.
